Step 2: Answer the following questions.
1. What stood out to you the most about this article?
2. Do you agree or disagree that Google is in fact making us dumb?
3. Why do you think that Google has became such a big thing?
4. Were you distracted at any point during this blog assignment?
Step 3: Respond to one of your peers blog.
1. Do you agree with your classmates post? Why or why not?
2. What question do you have for them?
Due: May 2, 2014 @ 11:59 pm.
1) Probably the fact that it's no the internet itself but the amount of information that passes through our head that is making us "stupid."
ReplyDelete2) I agree that it is dwindling our attention span and our patience.
3) I think Google has become such a big thing because it so easy and fast to use.
4) I was NOT distracted at any point in this blog assignment. Although the way the author ended the article made me chuckle.
I agree with you about how it has dwindled our patience, because I do get mad if I can't find the answer right away. I did also find it interesting how he said it was the amount of information that passes through our head that makes us stupid. Do you think that Google is just making us stupid or do you think it provides many benefits as well?
DeleteI agree that Google has become so popular due, at least mainly, to its user friendly interface and over-all effectiveness. I could see how it could be dividing our attention span, but don't quite agree with it. Once again I think the will power of the individual should be called into question more than the internet itself. I do think that it is making us less patient, mainly because we have gotten so used to the efficiency that the internet provides for us. Do you think we would be better off without Google? If so do you think another search engine would take its place in time?
DeleteI don't think stupid is the word I would use, more like.....impatient and almost to dependable. I say that meaning after looking something up a certain amount of times I believe you should at least have the general idea of it in your head.
DeleteThe thing that stood out to me most was that he didn't really provide any benefits of Google. He just talked about the negatives of Google. I disagree that Google is making us dumb. It may make us lazy, but it provides people with information they can use to get smart. It just gives the resources that they need at an easier and quicker way then outside resources. Google has become such a big thing because it is used for everything. People use it on a daily basis for all aspects of their lives. I wasn't distracted at all during this blog assignment besides people talking in the class, but even then I could still focus and get the blog done.
ReplyDelete1. I think the thing that stood out the most to me was the ending. I found the ending clever, though I was slightly disturbed by the grammatical error at the end of the article.
ReplyDelete2. I disagree. I think that having the information more readily available isn't really hurting us intellectually. I think that the only things it's really doing is saving us time and making more knowledge more accessible.
3.I think that it's becoming such a big thing because it's such a useful tool. I think that if it weren't so useful and didn't expand upon the needs of the user so much (Docs, Drive, Gmail, etc) then it wouldn't have blown up as much as it has.
4. I wasn't really distracted, at least not by the internet. I find people or other random things more distracting. In addition I believe if you really wanted to focus on something it won't really matter what's going on around you because you are so intent on doing that one thing.
I agree completely. Would you say other things on the internet distract you more? Or outside stimuli?
DeleteI agree with you, having information a click away isn't making us dumb. And the way that Google is expanding, it's only becoming more useful and helpful for us. The expanding definitely has made Google blow up more.
Delete1. I found it interesting that people retained less information while they read it online verses in a book. Because honestly, reading is reading, no matter where it's at.
ReplyDelete2. I don't agree that it's making us stupid at all. We don't lose any intelligence at all. It makes us lazy and dependent on Google. Stupid, is not the word to describe what Google and the internet is making us.
3.Google has became so big because it's efficient and easy.
4. I was. I stopped and checked my phone while doing this blog assignment. But I probably would've done the same if were reading a book.
1. AMEN. Gosh, Halee, you are so smart.
Delete2. AMEN AGAIN. stupid is the wrong word to use.
3. HEARD DAT
4. See, Google is not making us stupid, cell phones are.
I don't have any questions. you are a marvelous human.
1. The thing that stuck out the most to me was that this author only provided bad things about Google. Sure, Google is online, and there are hyperlinks and pop ups that can distract people, but there are so many positive things to Google, that, in my opinion, outweigh the negatives.
ReplyDelete2. No, I don't think that Google is making us "dumb" Google is simply making life easier. Yeah, we don't have to remember the information we learn, because the next time we forget, we can just Google it. But, that is just the way that society is now, and there's no point in trying to change it. Just use Google and shut up.
3. Google is such a big thing because it makes information, tools, such as maps, calculators, news papers, etc. so much more accessible. In our generation, everyone wants everything to be easy, and Google is just that,
4. No. Whether I would have read the article online or out of a book, I would have had the same response.
I agree with everything you said. You made some good points and I think you are right. I think that the reading a book and google are the same thing because its still reading. Also you can remember what happens in a book because its an emotional attachment so its easier to remember. How do you feel about thinking Google makes us stupid?
Deletewhat stood out to me most is that this article is all about opinion and that none of it was facts. The reason why I disagree is because he says that "If we need an answer to a question all we have to do is Google it, answer it, and forget it.
ReplyDeleteAsk yourself, what did you Google last week Monday? Can you remember any specific details? How did it end? What about the last book you read? Or the book you read 5 years ago. I would bet money you remember more about the book and at least remember how it ended." this to me is saying that he thinks that we have no ability to remember anything and that we will remember more from reading when in fact many people use Google to satisfy their desire to learn. another comment he made is "It’s BECAUSE of the immense amount of data passing through our skulls that our thought processes and attention spans have grown shallow and aphoristic" Just because we are becoming well lazy does not make us stupid. its a question of whether its lazy or efficient. I think Google has become such a big thing because it gives us information at our finger tips. I didn't get distracted during this blog assignment, unlike I do when I read a book. I think this is because I am so use to being able to get information fast
I don't think the author of this article is trying to focus on memory. Everyone forgets things. I think that he is just trying to use an example that BECAUSE it is so easy to find answers, it is easier to forget about them and move on.
DeleteI think what stood out is that we are losing are ability to focus because there is so much to distract us. I agree with this because if you are trying to do homework or something you are distracted by your phone or social media a lot. I dont think that Google is necessarily making us dumb. I just think its making information easier to access which results in us not getting smarter. I think that books and google are the same because its still reading information just in a different form. Google is so popular because you can access all kinds of information so quickly and easily. You dont have to go search through all kinds of information in books that doesnt pertain to what you need. I think it makes getting answers to questions easier. I was distracted by Halee getting distracted during the blog but I didnt go to any other websites or click on anything during the blog.
ReplyDeleteYou dont think google is making us dumb? I think that we dont remember the information we search and therefore we arent getting smarter.
DeleteI do agree though that it is a lot easier to get the information.
I dont have any questions for you.
I think the thing that stood out the most is the fact that I google things all the time, but I never remember what I google.
ReplyDeleteGoogle is making us dumb. Its the easy way to find answers.
It is such a big thing because It knows everything essentially.
I was distracted because people were talking all around me.
1) What stood out the most to me is how when you are reading a hard copy of something you can remember the majority of what it was about, but when you Google things, you hardly remember any of it.
ReplyDelete2) I don't think it is necessarily making us "dumb" but it is making us lazy. Instead of finding an answer the accurate way, we just look it up online. It's like copying someone else's homework at school. We aren't getting stupid, instead our brain potential just stays the same and doesn't get the chance to grow.
3) Google is so big because it makes it so easy for people to find answers.
4) I was distracted by people talking to me, but not by other articles or ads on the internet.
